August Blues

Nicholas Harmon_2In the old days, August was always seen as a very slow month for salmon. Well I’m afraid this year Salmo Salar seems to have reverted to their old ways.

Plenty of fish were showing and fresh fish still coming in but they have been extremely difficult to catch even for the experts. This seems to be the case in many fisheries.

Since my last update we have 13 fish landed. First on the list was Gareth Beattie on the 8th with a 4lbs10oz fish off the Turn pool on a Cascade. Robert Ganly also had a fish off Finlough weighing in at 4lbs11ozs taken on a Black Pennell.

Gareth Beattie had another on the 10th again off the Turn pool weighing in at 8lbs6ozs and taken on a Willie Gunn. Stephen Buchanan also had one that day off Doolough of 3lbs5ozs on a Silver Doctor.

We had 3 fish landed on the 11th, 2 by Mark Corps (who didn’t bring his wife this time for fear she’d outfish him again), one from the Turn pool of 6lbs4ozs on an Orange Prawn fly and the other from the Whin of 3lbs on a Tara shrimp; the third landed by Philip Maher of 10lbs approx. from the Turn pool on a Nymph.

On the 13th Urs had a fish from Finlough of 10lbs7.5ozs on a Cascade. He had another on the 16th also from Finlough of 2lbs11ozs on an improved Helmores Hackles.

Will Hamo Sea Trout Doo 8th AugHis fishing partner Markus Merz had a fish of 5lbs from the Grilse pool on the 17th on a Silver Stoat.

On the 18th Barbara Ceillier eclipsed her husband on this visit by landing her first Delphi salmon of the year of 4lbs off Finlough on a Silver Stoat.

Finally yesterday we had 2 off Finlough. The first was taken by Godfrey Spickernell, weighing in at 5lbs13.5ozs on a Van Beck. The second by Michael Righton of 3lbs7ozs on a Cascade.

Sea trout have been promising so far this month despite relatively little effort. We have approx.130 caught to date for the month, including two crackers off Doo landed by Denis Quill and William Hamilton. Both fish weighed between 5and 6lbs.

For those interested there is nearly always availability for sea trout fishing at short notice.

Finally on a slightly different note but worth mentioning none the less.

Firstly congratulations to Sean Moogan who was the winning boatman in Lough Mask’s World Cup Fly Fishing Championships.

And secondly congratulations to Anna Watkins (Oli’s wife) who won gold in the Olympics in rowing’s double skulls with Kathrine Granger.
