Well, whatever about the early part of July being dry it has certainly made up for it now with 46mms (1.88”) recorded on Monday morning and the river rose to 80 on Sunday evening and was running at 65 on Monday morning. We did have a small flood on the 17ththat put the river from 6 to 45, but as this was the first in well over a month the river was as expected dirty for the first eight hours.
At the time of my last update we were experiencing some beautiful weather and water levels were at 8. Despite this exceptional weather we did manage to land three fish on the 13th. Mike Copues had one from the Stream on Finlough of 3lbs8ozs on a Hairy Mary. Andrew McLiney from the US managed to land his first ever salmon, a nice fresh fish of 2lbs12ozs from the Whin Pool on a Sunrae Shadow. Not to be outdone by his brother Cap McLiney then landed his first ever in the afternoon, a fish of 6lbs from the Turn Pool on a Beaded Nymph.
Week 29 saw the return of some long-standing syndicate members and we also welcomed some new ones. Once again Alan Boyd was to the fore. Alan had five fish for the week. The first was on the 14thfrom the Quarry on a Collie Dog, weighing in at 3lbs8ozs. He had two on the 18thfrom the Quarry and the Meadow, on a Sunrae Shadow and a Cascade, weighing in at 3lbs5ozs and 3lbs11ozs respectively. The following day he had two more, one from the Deadman’s of approx. 3lbs and one from the Schoolhouse of 4lbs15ozs, both on a Sunrae Shadow. His fishing partner Ken McMillan also had one of approx. 3lbs from the Meadow again on a Sunrae Shadow.
Week 30 again saw a mixture of old and new syndicate members. Alexander Mills was first off the mark with a fish of 2lbs10ozs from Sligo Bay on Finlough on a Collie Dog. Sunday night saw very heavy rain and by morning the river had cleared and dropped to 65. Robbie Scott had two fish early on, both from the Turn Pool, the first weighing in at 3lbs11.5ozs and the second of 4lbs8ozs. Both were taken on a Glen Farclas. It was then the turn of brother and sister team of Hugo Swan and Gemma Brind, who had fish of 3lbs5ozs and 5lbs12ozs from the Meadow and Turn Pools on a Tosh and a Park Shrimp. George Westropp had two in the afternoon, the first from the Turn of 3lbs5ozs and the second from the Quarry of 4lbs2ozs, both on a Zonker. Bob Hadden had one from the Grilse Pool of approx. 5lbs on an RS Super Snaelda. There were three landed yesterday, Alexander Mills having another off Finlough of 4lbs12ozs on a Collie Dog. Andy Kish landed his first ever salmon, of 2lbs8ozs from the Quarry on a Delphi Collie and Gemma Brind had her second, of 4lbs8ozs from the Quarry on a Shrimp variant. The river is running at 53 this morning and George Westropp had another fish from the Quarry of 5lbs7ozs on once again a Zonker.
The system is well topped up now and the river is at 53 and it looks like there is more rain tomorrow, so hopefully the good catches will continue over the next week or so. D.McEvoy
