Weather wise July was a month of two halves. Total rainfall for the month was 180mms, only 25mms of which had fallen by the 15th. The remainder 155mms fell between the 16th and the rest of the month. Water levels obviously reflected this, with levels dropping to 0 before the rain.
There were twenty fish landed up to the 15th and the remainder, thirty four up till the end of the month. Given the good flood we had, especially on the 21st, I thought we should have had landed more, but you never know with salmon what will happen.
There were seventeen fish landed since my last update. George Westropp had his second fish of the day on the 24th off Finlough of 4lbs3ozs again on a Zonker. Sean Coffey who was a guest of one of our new syndicate members had a fish of 2lbs5ozs from the Quarry on a Delphi Collie. Claire Swan one of our long standing syndicate members had a fish of 3lbs the following morning on a Delphi Collie from the Turn Pool. Alexander Mills also had one that evening from the Rock Pool of 4lbs1oz on a Willie Gunn.
There were five on the 26th, with young Finn Taylor landing a lovely 4lbs13ozs fresh fish from the Meadow Pool on a Park Shrimp. George Westropp finished his week in fine style with one of 6lbs9ozs from Salmon City on Finlough, again on a Zonker. Alexander Mills had another of 4lbs11ozs from Finlough, again on a Willie Gunn. Boat partners David Middlemiss and Bob Hadden had one each off Finlough, of 3lbs7ozs and 3lbs11ozs, on a Collie Dog and an RS Super Snaelda.
The 27th was a great day for Ryan Heffernan and Bianca Shannon from the US who both landed their first ever salmon. Ryan’s, from Boat Point on Finlough was taken on a Sunrae Shadow and weighed in at 4lbs3ozs and Bianca’s was off the New Island Pool on Cascase Mirage Mini Tube and weighed 3lbs13ozs. Denis Daly finished his stay the following morning with a fish of 2lbs11ozs off the Quarry on a Mini Tube. On the 29th Eduardo Moor had a fresh fish of 3lbs11ozs from the Rock Pool on a Sunrae Shadow.
Kevin McEvoy also landed his first ever, a fish of 3lbs9ozs from the Deadman’s on a Posh Tosh. There were two on the 30th, with Ben Johnson having one from the Grilse Pool of 2lbs10ozs on a Cascade and Michael Weisser having one from the Stream on Finlough of 3lbs3ozs also on a Cascade. Michael finished off the month with another the next day from the Horseshoe on a Bann Special, the fish also weighing 3lbs3ozs.
The River is now running at 30 and it looks like there may be some broken weather next week, so water levels should be maintained at a fishable height. D.McEvoy
