Change on the Way
At this stage it finally looks like there is a change in the weather, which will be most welcome for all salmon anglers and indeed farmers and gardeners will be glad to see some rain too. May had been extremely dry up until Saturday the 25th, with only 15mms of rain, which is just slightly more than the record here, which stands at 10mms in February 1986. Since then we had 27mms on Saturday night and Sunday morning and 7mms on Monday morning. There has also been some heavy showers and there is more persistent rain forecast from Wednesday on.
As a result of the prolonged dry spell, the river had fallen to -6. The rain on Saturday night put it up to 20 by Sunday morning and it’s now at 15, which is low enough, but it looks like a flood compared to -6. No fish have been landed since the rain, but we have seen fresh fish running and there was a grilse lost yesterday in the Waterfall. Hopefully the freshening up of the system will bring in some fish and put them in the mood!
On a more sombre note, Delphi lost another of it’s long standing friends and customers. Hugh Brennan passed away after a short illness on the 12thof May. Hugh had been coming to Delphi for almost 30 years and will be sadly missed by all here.
Hugh’s claim to fame here was that he landed the Millennium Salmon on the 2ndof February 2000 in the Rock Pool. The fish still holds pride of place in the Library of the Lodge. His affinity for Delphi and all it encompasses was such that his last fishing trip on this earth was to Delphi, with his family, shortly before he passed away. All here at Delphi extend our sympathies to his wife Ann and all his family. May he Rest In Peace. D.McEvoy
