Half Century for August
Well, it’s hard to believe that August has been and gone already and the fishing despite the usual August Blues at times was quite reasonable. We managed to land 50 salmon which is above our 10 year average, although not near our July total of 158. Conditions, it must be said were excellent throughout with 292.3mms (11.5”) , which all sun seekers on the Wild Atlantic Way can testify to.
There were however a few dry days from the 7th to the 16th, by which time the river had dropped to 3, but quickly rose again on the 17th, when we had 41.7mms. As is often the case it was the first two weeks that proved most productive, with 34 of the 50 landed up to and including the 13th. There were a couple of fish landed on the 1st, which also coincided with the arrival of some original syndicate members and they proved to be extremely efficient, with their experience and skill telling.
The Beattie’s had 9 fish for their first week, Willie Hamilton had 2, Will Parkes and Danny Irvine 4 between them and David, Cameron and Marcus Dodd all managed to land their first ever salmon. 17 of the 19 salmon in the first week came off Finlough. Week 33 saw 13 fish landed with the Beattie party once again to the fore, landing a dozen and Eithne Carroll landing the other one.
All fish were taken on Finlough. There were five fish landed on the 18th on the dropping flood and then 11 fish for the remainder of the month. Damien Bourke managed to land his first ever salmon, a fish of 5lbs2ozs taken in the Turn Pool on a Pot Belly Shrimp. Notable catches included Barbara Ceillier, with a fish of approx 10lbs from Finlough on a Daddy.
Sea trout have been disappointing with approximately 80 landed. Having said that very few people specifically targeted them, with the exception of Willie Hamilton and Pat O’Dwyer, who had 30 for their week.
There are some more serious sea trout anglers coming in the next week, so it will be interesting to see how they fare out.
Tight lines to all and most importantly Stay Safe. D.McEvoy
