Two for May Day and April Report
The first was landed by Swiss man Markus Merz who having tried for the last five years thankfully managed to land a beautiful 9lbs8ozs fish off the Grilse pool on a Willie Gunn. It goes without saying that all here were truly delighted that Markus had finally broken his five year blank streak in spring time.
He was joined on the day by a regular German visitor, Yvonne who had a sea liced fish of 10lbs2ozs off Finlough in almost flat calm conditions. This fish was taken on a Norwegian pattern, a Grey Mango.
The river had risen nicely to 35 yesterday morning as we had some rain the previous night, which topped up what fell on Saturday and Sunday. Besides the two that were caught there were some fresh fish seen on Finlough and I personally saw four good springers entering the system. Hopefully this is the start of a bonanza for the month of May!!
Urs Leibundgut had managed to land a nice sea liced fish of 7lbs2.5ozs on Sunday from the Rock pool on a Delphi Collie. This was his 399th Delphi fish and we have the Champagne on ice as we await his 400th.
Urs’s fish brought our total for the month of April to a disappointing nine. Conditions for the most part were good enough to catch fish, but there didn’t seem to be a good run entering the system. This appeared to be the case with spring fish in general as most fisheries down on previous years.
The highlight here in April was the quality of the fish with the average weight being 10.46lbs. There were three spectacular fish taken. The first two of 13 and 13lbs15ozs were taken by Victoria Love and Cian Murtagh respectively. The third was a magnificent fish taken by Dominic Cox of 17lbs1oz off Finlough. Fish were also taken by Andrew Lyall, John Mills, William Beattie and Tim Pettigrew.
Here’s hoping for a great May! D.McEvoy
