Here at Delphi Lodge we are now pleased to offer our guests some ‘special experience day’ outings, which are proving to be very popular, especially with many of our new guests.
A typical day out is the ‘Seafood Experience’ outing, where guests enjoy a 4½ hour trip around the Killary Fjord in a powerful rib/speedboat to visit local mussel and oyster farmers along the bay, who demonstrate and explain shellfish farming. This is an excellent opportunity for guests to try some freshly harvested oysters accompanied by a glass or two of specially chosen white wine.
The next point of call for the boat is at a local farm where a demonstration of farming traditions of the area, such as the fascinating and ancient art of turf cutting and working sheepdogs can be enjoyed.
Moving on, guests are then brought out to a deserted famine village where the historical and political backdrop to that particular era, as well as the consequent mass emigration, is described and explained.
Guests are then treated to a special Delphi picnic lunch, after which they are shown how to check and bait lobster pots, with hopefully a few to gather for the kitchen.
Then it’s back to the Lodge in plenty of time for a relaxing drink or two before dinner. Michael Wade
